Description

On an overcast afternoon, shortly after an ash storm and a burst of heavy rain, a female jaguar nursed her cub on the banks of the Três Irmãos River. Their wet fur carried light traces of ash, a reminder of the fires that had recently swept through the area. Nursing in the open is extremely unusual for this species, which typically raises its young in dense, secluded cover. But that year—during the pandemic—very few people visited the region, and with much of the forest burned, the river margins offered the only safe refuge for mother and cub. I have travelled to this area every year since 2013, yet I had never witnessed such a fragile and revealing moment: a normally hidden behaviour brought into view by the combined pressures of fire, habitat loss, and the instinct to protect a vulnerable young life. Although the forest was still scarred, the first rains of the season—three weeks earlier—had already begun to coax new growth from the ash.
